Travel is living

This whole site is about me becoming a teacher, so why a page about travel?

Because, when you are travelling around the world, you are experiencing new cultures, meeting people with different backgrounds, seeing others history etc. All these things can give you a better understanding of the world and people in it and an opportunity to compare your own background with theirs, your cultures versus theirs and so on and so forth. By during so, I think a lot of bigotry and racism can be 'killed' because you do not only see things from our own point of view but from theirs also.

So if I, as a teacher, teaching about cultures and haven't travelled anywhere, how can I have any credibility when teaching about these cultures?

Back in 2000, my family and I were going to Croatia on vacation. Whenever we told where we were going people responded; "Croatia, isn't that a war zone?" First of all, Croatia is only about 1700 km from Denmark, just beside Italie and second of all, there hasn't been war in Croatia since 1995. I remember even back then I thought: "What? In which age do you live", and I was only a teenager back then. This case shows me that, if you do not come out of your front door, you will have a hard time having an educated opinion about what goes around in the world.

From this trip, I also learned something else about travel and what these experiences can give you of perspective. On a trip from the town of Pula on Istia to the national park Plitvice Lakes, we were driving through the Croatian highland. In the highlands, I saw with my own eyes what the war had done to this land.

Big bullet holes in the buildings throughout an entire village gave me a kind of reality teach and put life and the Croatians life into perspective. When experience things like these in real life and not just on television gives a whole nother view of people living in such situations and a better understanding of their culture.

This also helps me today, when war refugees come to Denmark. I would never say "Go back to where you come from", because if I where in their shoes, I would also flee away to a safe country.

So we need to travel, experience the world to put our own safe lives into a larger perspective.
